Miami Neuroscience Center has become an accredited provider for an exciting new treatment for gliomas. This groundbreaking treatment is called Optune. Glioblastoma, also known as glioblastoma multiforme or GBM, is the most common form of primary brain cancer in adults. GBM cells grow rapidly, with a large number of cells reproducing at any given time.
Optune is a noninvasive regional therapy that targets dividing cancer cells in the brain and generally does not harm healthy cells. Optune works by creating alternating, “wave-like” electric fields called Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields). TTFields travel across the upper part of the brain in different directions to help slow or stop recurrent glioblastoma cancer cells from dividing.
