Larkin Community Hospital    is building a $12 million facility for Dr. Aizik Wolf, who is bringing his neurosurgery practice over from Baptist Health South Florida    ’s Doctors Hospital    . The centerpiece of the facility will be the Perfexion, the newest generation of the Gamma Knife, which is primarily used to treat brain cancer. Wolf has been in practice with the Gamma Knife since 1991 and with Baptist Health since 1993, but he decided to move to Larkin, taking his staff of 23 with him. “I don’t want to practice corporate medicine anymore,” Wolf said. “I want to practice as a physician without a corporation guiding my medical care.” Baptist Health will keep its five-year-old Gamma Knife, while Aizik gets a $4 million new machine at Larkin. This one will have a built-in CT and MRI scanner. In January, it will be housed in a newly constructed 10,000-square-foot Miami Neuroscience Center at the southern Miami-Dade County hospital. Wolf said he does about 400 procedures with the Gamma Knife annually. While brain cancer surgery is its main use, the machine is also utilized to treat severe facial pain and fix bad connections between veins and arteries that cause seizures and bleeding. Wolf said the Larkin facility would be a center of excellence in neuroscience and oncology that will work with new cancer treatments. He is also interested in cooperating with academic institutions. In September, Larkin signed a partnership with the Institute for Non-Surgical Orthopedics to create a clinic and medical residency program at the hospital in partnership with Nova Southeastern University    ’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. In October, the for-profit hospital modified its mortgage with Ocean Bank    to add a $3.5 million construction advance. The 146-bed hospital posted net income of $2.8 million on net operating revenue of $52.1 million in 2010, according to state data.
