Dr. Choukroun lectures on the use of A-PRF for the treatment of muco-gingival defects.
On February 18th, 2015, our PGY1 AEGD residents had the opportunity to attend an all day workshop on advanced tissue regeneration techniques given by renown physician and scientist Dr. Joseph Choukroun.
Dr. Choukroun presented the scientific basis and clinical application of A-PRF (Advanced-Platelet Rich Fibrin). The A-PRF technique produces natural fibrin that slowly releases cytokines, including monocytes, granulocytes and plasma proteins all of which are essential for healing. Residents learned how stem cells, BMP-2 and BMP-7 are released from the PRF clot and how this combination of factors results in accelerated soft and hard tissue healing.
A-PRF is produced from patient’s blood immediately prior to its use. Patient’s blood is drawn into a vacuum tube and immediately centrifuged to separate it into its components. Fibrin forms in the tube, is removed, compressed then placed into the surgical site. A-PRF benefits patients who need to have a tooth removed by providing a natural healing matrix that protects the extraction socket, speeds healing and fosters bone regeneration without inducing any foreign antigens. The procedure can be performed very quickly and with minimal cost.
Dr. Joseph CHOUKROUN received his MD diploma in 1979 at Montpellier, France. He completed his specialty training in Anesthesiology in 1981 at the University of Montpellier and a fellowship at the Pain Clinic at the University of Strasbourg. Dr. Choukroun is president and founder of the SYFAC, the international symposium on growth factors, he is also the inventor of the PRF technique and author of several scientific and clinical papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is an international speaker and chief of staff at the Private Pain Clinic in Nice France.
